Sunrise Over The MCG

I was in Melbourne the other night and just couldn't get to sleep. Eventually I closed my eyes at around 1:30am. As you can imagine I felt a little brittle the next morning, but with a sunrise like this you just have to get out of bed and grab the camera!

...after which I promptly got back into bed... :)

Power To The People

This is the Kriel Power Station, one of a number of power stations dotted along the coal-rich Highveld area in South Africa. I have many fond memories of this place, growing up in a tiny town with the same name not far from where my dad took this picture.

Ten Past Seven

The benefit of being far from the equator and having daylight savings time is that you can wander around after work and still have enough daylight for some pictures. This shot caught my eye as I wandered the streets of Melbourne.

This is the beautiful architecture of Flinders Street Station in Melbourne.

Eureka Storm

I was walking to the office last week in Melbourne with some dark clouds looming behind the Eureka Tower.

The Door

This is the Victoria Barracks located on St Kilda Road in Melbourne. It is a lovely building dating back to 1872. It housed a number of Army units and during the Second World War was used by the Australian War Cabinet.

Eureka!

You may have noticed a few pictures that I posted lately that were taken from the Eureka Tower in Melbourne. Here are two pictures of the tower itself, and a few interesting facts below that I got from Wikipedia.

Interestingly enough, the windows on the top ten floors are plated with 24 carat gold, as can be seen in my picture that I posted here.

The Summit Levels (floors 82 to 87) contain only one apartment per floor: each apartment had an original price tag of A$7 million just for the empty space; purchasers were required to fit out the apartment at additional cost.

The highest floors of the tower house an observation deck (level 88), restaurant (level 89), communications room and balcony (90) and water tanks (90 and 91). A system of pumps constantly moves water between the two 300,000  Litre tanks to counteract wind-induced oscillations.

Bridge Over Quiet Waters

This is the St Kilda Road bridge over the Yarra river in Melbourne, taken from the Capital City Trail in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

St Paul's

This photo is a little busy, bus is a nice shot showing the impressive St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne, also from the Eureka Observation Deck.

Inside The Worm

This is the pedestrian bridge over the railway lines just west of Richmond Station, connecting the Melbourne Cricket Ground with the Rod Laver and Hisense Arenas in Melbourne Park.

The Needle

This is a night shot of the Melbourne State Theatre.

Mustard Seed

This is the Mustard Seed Uniting Church in Sydney, with beautiful Christmas decorations on a cool evening.

Bright Autumn Morning

People and cars were rushing past me when I took this photo one morning in Sydney on my way to work. I think very few noticed the lovely autumn colours highlighted by the glow of the morning sun.

The Cathedral

Some time back I posted pictures taken inside the St John's Cathedral in Brisbane, this is the same cathedral viewed from Queen street.

Venus Rising

This interesting abstract tower was chosen as a piece of public art for Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, to the value of $800 000. Wolfgang Buttress' submission won the competition with his "Venus Rising" tower shown here. It is impressive, but seriously, this tower cost $800 000?!? If they had asked me I would have done it for $500 000.

The Old Treasury

The Old Treasury Building in Melbourne, just east of the CBD. I went for a walk late one afternoon after work and passed this beautiful building as the sun disappeared behind the horizon.

Glass Reflections

The two tallest buildings in Melbourne pictured on an overcast day. First is the Eureka Tower standing 297 m (975 ft) tall and completed in June 2006. It is pictured here with the sun reflecting off it's angled façade, and with the beautifully contrasting architecture of the Forum Theatre in the foreground.

This is the equally impressive Rialto Towers that was completed in 1986 and comes in at 251 m (824 ft) with 63 floors.

A Fiery Reflection

This is the building of the ANZ Bank in Bundall on the Gold Coast in Queensland. I had just finished work at the Gold Coast City Council when I walked out and was greeted by this view.

Magnificent Melbourne! Part Two: Trigonometric Shapes

This is the AAMI Stadium in Melbourne, quite a unique structure, and rather striking with the background of dark clouds. Here is a picture of the same structure at night photographed from the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower.
