Kurilpa

The Kurilpa pedestrian and cycle bridge in Brisbane. The bridge opened on 4 October 2009. It connects Kurilpa Point in South Brisbane to Tank Street in the Brisbane CBD.

Kurilpa Bridge is the world’s largest tensegrity bridge and was judged World Transport Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival.

Dazzling Hues of Greens and Blues

The aptly named Rainbow Lorikeet boasting the wildest neon-like colours. The bird life in Australia is spectacular, with 65 species of parrot alone, and all but 5 found only in Australia. 

I'm fortunate enough to see these beautiful birds almost every morning at the train station while waiting for the train - they certainly brighten up my day!  :)

Pretty Fly

Forget for a moment that you are looking at an insect despised by all, then you'll notice that it is actually a very beautiful little creature.

I'm impressed with the Nikon 55-300mm zoom. The camera was about 1.5m (approx 5 feet) away from this fly and even at this distance you can see the hairs on it's legs (click on the image to enlarge).

A true macro lens would probably give a better picture, but you'd have a hard time getting the fly to sit still for you with the camera a few centimetres away. What also helps is Nikon's Vibration Reduction technology, keeping the picture still and in focus in spite of my shaky hands.

Dinner Time

This fellow was enjoying his dinner when I walked past. Nothing like a fresh ladybug...

Here is another fine specimen waiting for his next meal. He's missing a leg but impressive none the less.

When a camera dies...

It was a sad day when my trusty little Kodak SLR-wannabie died. It has served me well for the last six years with many of its photos still to be published here. 

Fortunately I started saving up for my Nikon some time ago, so before long I became the proud owner of a new Nikon D5100 SLR with 18-55mm and 55-300mm VR zoom lenses. Let the fun begin!
