This is one of my wife's favourite birds, the kookaburra. Wikipedia states that "Kookaburras are best known for their unmistakable call, which sounds uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter – good-natured, but rather hysterical, merriment in the case of the renowned Laughing Kookaburra and maniacal cackling in the case of the slightly smaller Blue-winged Kookaburra."
This one is a Laughing Kookaburra that I saw close to the Story Bridge in Brisbane. Many mornings we wake up with their "laughter". It is very cute, except when it happens at 4:45am.

Ek was tot redelik onlangs oortuig dat Kookaburra net die handelsnaam is van 'n krieketkolf! :) Pragtig!
ReplyDeleteSoos die beskrywing op Wikipedia sê, hulle "sang" is 'n baie harde histeriese "gelag". Ek het ook nie geweet van hierdie oulike voëltjies nie, en my eerste kennismaking met hulle was een oggend baie vroeg, nog voor sonop. Dit het kompleet geklink of iemand reg buite my kamervenster so hard lag, met die gevolg dat ek amper die bed se lakens moes was daardie dag... :)
DeleteDit lyk baie soos 'n tipe visvanger, en dit klink of hy oof so hard en indringend kan roep.
ReplyDeleteJy is reg Francois, hulle is blykbaar 'n "terrestrial kingfisher", alhoewel hierdie spesifieke een 'n lekker vet, sappige insek gevang het kort na hierdie foto geneem is, so hulle is blykbaar nie beperk tot net vis nie.
