I went for an early morning walk in Sydney the other day and was rewarded with a unique moment. The sun was almost up when I spotted a beautiful kookaburra in the early morning mist, sitting on a wooden fence. Every so often he would fly down to the ground and catch an insect, after which he would return to his perch. This went on for a while and I managed to get quite close to him.
After a while he was joined by a feisty and mischievous black crow that didn't waste any time in trying to annoy and chase away the kookaburra.
It was not long before a second crow came to join his mate. First they both sat on the one side of the kookaburra but then, as if they had carefully planned it, the one crow hopped over to the other side and as soon as there was a crow on either side of the kookaburra they attacked him from opposite ends.
The kookaburra fought back valiantly and it wasn't long before both crows were chased off, after which he resumed his early morning breakfast of juicy bugs.
Because it was still so early the light was not very good so the action shots came out a little blurry, but overall I was happy and fortunate to have witnessed a little bit of nature in that busy city.
